Is Telehealth Therapy Right for You? A Guide for Adults in Nevada and Washington

If you've been considering therapy but keep putting it off, because of your schedule, because you live far from a provider, or because walking into a therapist's office feels like too big a step, telehealth therapy might be exactly what makes the difference.

As a Board Certified-Telemental Health Provider licensed in both Nevada and Washington, I work with adults across both states entirely online. In my experience, the question isn't really whether telehealth is "as good" as in-person therapy. The better question is: is telehealth the right fit for you, your life, and what you're working through?

Here's an honest guide to help you figure that out.

What is telehealth therapy, exactly?

Telehealth therapy simply means you and your therapist meet over a secure video platform instead of in a physical office. Sessions look and feel very similar to in-person therapy. You'll talk, explore, and do the work — just from wherever you are. All of my sessions are conducted via a HIPAA-compliant video platform, which means your privacy is legally protected the same way it would be in a traditional therapy setting.

Signs telehealth therapy might be a great fit for you

  • Your schedule is unpredictable or packed. Commuting to an appointment adds 30–60 minutes to either side of a session. If your schedule is already stretched, that friction can mean therapy never happens. Telehealth removes it entirely.

  • You live in a rural or underserved area. Nevada and Washington both have large rural communities with limited access to mental health providers. Telehealth means you don't have to drive two hours each way to get quality care. If you have reliable internet, you have access.

  • Anxiety or trauma makes leaving the house difficult .For many people dealing with anxiety, PTSD, or OCD, the idea of sitting in a waiting room or driving to an unfamiliar office adds unnecessary stress before a session even starts. Starting from your own home can make it easier to be present and open.

  • You travel frequently or have an inconsistent location. As long as you're in a state where your therapist is licensed, telehealth allows therapy to continue uninterrupted — whether you're at home, a hotel, or your car (parked privately, of course).

  • You've tried in-person therapy and found the commute unsustainable. Many people stop going to therapy not because it wasn't helping, but because the logistics eventually wore them down. Telehealth removes that barrier.

When telehealth might not be the right fit

Telehealth is effective for a wide range of concerns, but it isn't the right fit for every situation.

It may not be ideal if:

  • You are currently in crisis and need immediate, in-person support

  • You have a severe psychiatric condition that requires more intensive, in-person treatment

  • You don't have a private, reliable space to meet from

  • You strongly prefer in-person connection and have found virtual communication frustrating

What the research actually says

Research consistently shows that telehealth therapy is just as effective as in-person therapy for conditions including anxiety, depression, OCD, and trauma-related disorders. A growing body of evidence supports the use of online Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP) — one of the gold-standard treatments for OCD — delivered via telehealth. The therapeutic relationship — the trust and connection between you and your therapist — is one of the strongest predictors of outcomes in therapy. That relationship can absolutely be built over video.

A note on privacy and technology One of the most common concerns I hear is about privacy.

Here's what I want you to know:

  • All sessions are conducted over a HIPAA-compliant platform

  • Your session content is confidential, with the same legal protections as in-person therapy

  • You'll need a private space — a bedroom, a parked car, even a bathroom with the door locked works — and headphones help
